Who is Trent?

My excitement for photography started when I was a small kid. My father had an SLR camera, something no one else seemed to have. Developing his black and white rolls at home in the laundry, I remember the red light shining above in the light socket, and the intense-smelling fumes that filled the air.

Watching the excitement unravel before me, and seeing the process, gave me a keen interest in photography and its potential. I was curious, and this never left me.

School gave me the opportunity to tinker briefly with a camera, while university gave me the tools to understand the camera inside and out. My first shoots were headshots for friends, and soon after that, bands for agencies. Then, as I relocated to the big smoke of Sydney, I graduated to shooting music artists for record companies.

I was lucky to meet some incredible artists, both locally and internationally. Later, delving into the corporate world, I was again blessed with the opportunities that came my way, and grateful to be shooting some of the most prominent politicians of our lifetime, such as Bob Hawke. Photographing such influential figures as prime ministers and prime ministers-to-be, governors-general, and even a president are experiences I’ll never forget.

My passion for landscape arose when I was commissioned to shoot a very special area out in the countryside. My eyes were opened. I’d shoot, and I was allowed to shoot what I wanted, rather than what I needed to shoot. This was a very different process for me.

So, the early morning alarm clock began. The 4am, cold winter Sydney mornings became my go-to. Morning after morning, I realised that this is what you had to do to get the shot. So that’s what I did.

Later, moving back to the warm sunshine of Queensland, I had a big change in my landscape shooting style, where a fascination with clouds and their colours arose. This was after a big conversation with one of my sisters, and the ensuing dream I had that night.

Shooting the colours in their vivid array opened a whole new perspective on my photography practice. I realised that I may only have a few seconds to capture the image I wanted. I kept this at the forefront of my mind when shooting. Daily, I challenge what I can do, and what I shoot.

I’m now super excited to share my journey, my early mornings, and my repetitive locations to capture that one single shot. This is my one passion, and I am grateful for it daily. So, welcome to TRENT. Photography of the unknown. Photography that takes a chance on the colours of the skies, and the world as we see it.
